On 3rd February, 2019 odd 50 of us attended a Focused Diagnosis & Effective Treatment workshop For Back Problems.

We were called in two batches of 25 each, wherein one batch attended the workshop in the morning and the second batch attended in the noon. It was conducted at a pleasant, calm hall in Lower Parel.

At the workshop, we got all the theoretical knowledge and Practical approach, with hands on assessment and management for varied back problems.

It was only for the first time that we realised there could be 20+ causes for 1 single symptom- Back Pain. How enlightening was that itself!

This workshop was conducted by SWITCH INDIA, as a part of its Medical Education wing, with a goal of preventing unnecessary spine surgeries & having physiotherapy as the first line of treatment for back pain.

At the workshop, we also learnt detailed history taking with respect to back pain, Mckenzie assessment for back pain, learnt how to list down various differential diagnosis & eventually come to a Provisional Diagnosis based on history itself.

The instructor also taught us Neurodynamic assessment for low back pain radiating to lower limbs. We were divided into 5 groups of 5 people each and each group was given a different case study. It enabled us to apply the knowledge we had got from the workshop in the first 2/3rd part of it.

Since all 5 groups got 5 different cases, we got to learn other conditions as well apart from the case that my group had got for history taking and assessment.

We then discussed a tailor made plan of care for each of the cases. The instructor also told us about different approaches to treat back pain.

Our resource person / the instructor, Dr Nidhi Agarwal was so thorough with the content she taught, had ample of knowledge on the topic chosen, had an amazing ability to put forth the knowledge she had to enable us to learn things well.

She made sure we understood every aspect of the topic and that's what made the entire picture of back pain clear for us.

At the end, our informal feedbacks and suggestions were also taken which proved how efficiently and seriously the workshop was taken in view of giving the optimum takeaways from the session.
